Ernst, working first in Cologne and later in Paris, was one of the most imaginative of the artists who began as Dadaists and became Surrealists. His irrational assembly of photographs and drawn shapes command attention and evoke a feeling of uneasiness. This feeling stems from our responses to the concreteness of the photographic imagery in opposition to the suggestive but unidentifiable forms created by the artist’s brush. The unnerving relationship and staccato image associations evoked by discordant notes in Ernst’s collages served to mock conventions and thus fostered the central ideas of Dada and Surrealism. Formulated was a world quite different from the politically oriented collages of Hausmann and Heartfield.
